How to rent a car with automatic transmission
On Car-Rentals.ro you can search for an automatic car at every pick-up point in the booking form, from small cars to SUVs. The search form has no transmission field: search first with your pick-up point and dates, then choose “Automatic” in the “Transmission” filter on the results page. On a phone, tap “Filters”, choose “Automatic” under “Transmission” and confirm with the button at the bottom of the screen.
The “Automatic” option appears in the filter only if at least one automatic car is available for your pick-up point and dates. If it is missing, try other dates or another pick-up point.
The automatic classes you can book online are listed below; which cars are free on your dates, and their prices, is shown only in the search results.
How booking works
- Search. In the form at the top, choose the pick-up point, the dates and times, state the driver’s age and start the search.
- Choose a class. The results show the classes available for your dates, with the total price; you can filter them by transmission, vehicle type or number of seats. You book a category, not a model: the car in the picture is an example, which is why “or similar” appears next to the name.
- Choose protection and options. You add optional protection and extras when they are offered for the car you chose; the total is updated in the booking summary.
- Enter your details. Send the booking and receive the confirmation by e-mail; you can reopen it at any time on the Check reservation page. You pay at pick-up.

What you need at pick-up
The driver’s documents, the card for the deposit and the age the driver must have are set by the rental company of your booking: its rules are below, under “What the rental company’s conditions say”, each with the article of its conditions.
Payment and what is included
- Nothing is paid online: you pay the rental company at pick-up. The deposit amount is shown in your booking summary.
- You see the total price before you send the booking, with the mandatory fees included.
- What the rate includes and what you pay separately (protection, the mileage limit, fees) are set by the rental conditions of the company that hands you the car.

Similar car: If the car you chose can no longer be made available for objective, technical, operational or availability reasons, the rental company may propose a similar car or an available alternative. Rental Conditions, art. 12.6

Documents: When you sign the contract, you present your original driving licence, an identity document and a credit card valid for at least 3 months after the contract closing date. Rental Conditions, art. 2.1

International driving licence: It is mandatory for citizens of states that are neither parties to the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic nor members of the European Union, or with which Romania has not concluded a treaty on the mutual recognition of driving licences, for holders of documents issued in countries using a script other than the Latin alphabet, and for licences obtained in right-hand-drive cars (for example the UK, India, Australia, Japan). Card for the deposit: A credit card is mandatory for the deposit. Pre-paid cards, virtual cards, cards not marked “credit” or not embossed and Diners Club cards are not accepted; fintech cards (Revolut, Monese, N26, etc.) and virtual cards can be used only to pay for services, not for the deposit. Driver’s age: If a driver named in the contract is between 18 and 21 years old or over 65, a fee of €170 is charged and the liability limit cannot be reduced with SCDW or SCDW+. Rental Conditions, art. 4.3

Payment: You pay the rental company for the rental, the options chosen and any fees at pick-up, by credit or debit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express) or in cash; pre-paid cards and Diners Club cards are not accepted. Rental Conditions, art. 6.1, 6.3

Included protection: The rate includes CDW damage protection and theft protection (TP), and the car has RCA (third-party liability) insurance. In the event of damage or theft, your liability is limited to the excess set for the car, which you see in the booking summary. Rental Conditions, art. 4.1, 4.2

SCDW (optional): Reduces your liability in the event of damage or theft to the amount set in the contract, with the exceptions of art. 4.4 and chapter 5. Rental Conditions, art. 4.2.3, ch. 5

Road vignette and tolls: The road vignette (rovinietă) for Romania is included in the rate. Other road tolls, Green Card extensions, fuel, fines and costs resulting from actions of the local authorities concerning the car are your responsibility. Rental Conditions, art. 6.4

Mileage: For rentals of up to and including 3 days, a limit of 250 km per day applies, and extra kilometres are paid at the cost stated in the contract. For rentals of 4–30 days in Romania, the conditions set no limit; above 30 days, the limit is 2,500 km per month. Rental Conditions, art. 3.16

Handover hours: Handover and return take place Monday to Sunday, between 08:00 and 20:00. Outside these hours they are done on request, for a fee of €20 per handover and/or return. Rental Conditions, art. 3.2

How do I find an automatic car on Car-Rentals.ro?
Search with your pick-up point and dates, then choose “Automatic” in the “Transmission” filter on the results page. The search form has no transmission field, so you filter after searching. Why is there no “Automatic” option in the filter?
Because no automatic car is available for your search: the filter only lists the transmissions of the cars found for your pick-up point and dates. Try other dates or another pick-up point.
Do I book a specific automatic model?
No, you book a car category, not a specific model. The car in the picture is an example of the category, which is why its name is followed by “or similar”. The transmission type is shown on every car card in the results. If the car you chose can no longer be provided, the rental company may, under its conditions, offer you a similar one or an available alternative.
Which automatic cars can I rent?
The automatic classes you can book online range from small cars to SUVs, premium classes and an 8-seat van. They are listed on this page under “Car classes with automatic transmission”, and the search results show which cars are available on your dates.
What documents do I need to rent an automatic car?
Your original driving licence, an ID document and a credit card for the deposit. How long the card must still be valid, which cards are accepted and when you also need an International Driving Permit are set by the rental company: its rules are on this page, under “What the rental company’s conditions say”.
How much does an automatic car cost?
The price is calculated for each car category, for your pick-up point and dates, so we cannot quote it in advance. On the results page, choose “Automatic” in the “Transmission” filter and sort by “Total price: low to high” to list the automatic cars available on your dates by total price, in ascending order. Nothing is paid online on Car-Rentals.ro: you pay the rental company when you collect the car.
Can I pick up an automatic car at the airport?
Yes, if you choose an airport pick-up point in the booking form; every pick-up point is listed on this page under “Where you can pick up an automatic car”. The search results show which automatic cars are available there on your dates.
