How to rent an SUV
On Car-Rentals.ro you can search for an SUV at every pick-up point in the form. The search form has no field for the type of car: you search first with your location and dates, then choose “SUV” under the “Vehicle type” filter in the results. On a phone, tap “Filters”, choose “SUV” under “Vehicle type” and confirm with the button at the bottom of the screen.
The “Vehicle type” filter shows only the types of car found for your search: if there is no SUV among the results, the “SUV” option does not appear. Try other dates or another pick-up point.
Which SUVs you can rent
The SUV classes in the catalogue range from compact SUVs to intermediate, standard, premium and luxury classes. Some have a manual gearbox, others an automatic one, and some classes have all-wheel drive (4×4). You will find them below, under “The SUV classes”, each with the number of seats, the bags and the transmission.
- Automatic gearbox: combine the “SUV” and “Automatic” filters in the results; see also automatic car rental in Romania.
- All-wheel drive: under the “More” filter, choose “All-wheel drive (4×4)”; the class's card shows “All-wheel drive”.
- Lots of luggage: filter by “Large bags” or sort by “Most space”.

SUVs in the mountains and in winter
An SUV does not change the rules of the road:
- Paved roads. The rental company's conditions do not allow unpaved or unsurfaced roads, nor roads closed to public traffic, whatever the car. The exact rule is below.
- Winter tyres. On roads covered with snow, ice or frost, the car must have winter tyres; the Road Traffic Code sets no calendar period (art. 102). If you come in winter, ask when you book, through the Support page. Everything about winter roads: winter driving in Romania.
- Mountain roads. The high sections of the Transfăgărășan and the Transalpina close in the cold season, and when they are open, traffic may be allowed only at set hours: see Transfăgărășan and Transalpina by rental car.

How booking works
- Search. In the form at the top, choose the pick-up point, the dates and times, state the driver’s age and start the search.
- Choose a class. The results show the classes available for your dates, with the total price; you can filter them by transmission, vehicle type or number of seats. You book a category, not a model: the car in the picture is an example, which is why “or similar” appears next to the name.
- Choose protection and options. You add optional protection and extras when they are offered for the car you chose; the total is updated in the booking summary.
- Enter your details. Send the booking and receive the confirmation by e-mail; you can reopen it at any time on the Check reservation page. You pay at pick-up.
What you need at pick-up
The driver’s documents, the card for the deposit and the age the driver must have are set by the rental company of your booking: its rules are below, under “What the rental company’s conditions say”, each with the article of its conditions.
Payment and what is included
- Nothing is paid online: you pay the rental company at pick-up. The deposit amount is shown in your booking summary.
- You see the total price before you send the booking, with the mandatory fees included.
- What the rate includes and what you pay separately (protection, the mileage limit, fees) are set by the rental conditions of the company that hands you the car.

Similar car: If the car you chose can no longer be made available for objective, technical, operational or availability reasons, the rental company may propose a similar car or an available alternative. Rental Conditions, art. 12.6

Paved roads only: You may not drive on unpaved or unsurfaced roads, on roads closed to public traffic, in flooded areas or on road sections with an increased risk of damaging the car. Otherwise you pay the full cost of the repair, whatever protection you chose, including with SCDW or SCDW+. Rental Conditions, art. 2.6

Documents: When you sign the contract, you present your original driving licence, an identity document and a credit card valid for at least 3 months after the contract closing date. Rental Conditions, art. 2.1

International driving licence: It is mandatory for citizens of states that are neither parties to the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic nor members of the European Union, or with which Romania has not concluded a treaty on the mutual recognition of driving licences, for holders of documents issued in countries using a script other than the Latin alphabet, and for licences obtained in right-hand-drive cars (for example the UK, India, Australia, Japan). Card for the deposit: A credit card is mandatory for the deposit. Pre-paid cards, virtual cards, cards not marked “credit” or not embossed and Diners Club cards are not accepted; fintech cards (Revolut, Monese, N26, etc.) and virtual cards can be used only to pay for services, not for the deposit. Driver’s age: If a driver named in the contract is between 18 and 21 years old or over 65, a fee of €170 is charged and the liability limit cannot be reduced with SCDW or SCDW+. Rental Conditions, art. 4.3

Payment: You pay the rental company for the rental, the options chosen and any fees at pick-up, by credit or debit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express) or in cash; pre-paid cards and Diners Club cards are not accepted. Rental Conditions, art. 6.1, 6.3

Included protection: The rate includes CDW damage protection and theft protection (TP), and the car has RCA (third-party liability) insurance. Snow chains: Snow chains can be rented on request, together with the car, and are paid for separately. Rental Conditions, art. 3.22

Mileage: For rentals of up to and including 3 days, a limit of 250 km per day applies, and extra kilometres are paid at the cost stated in the contract. For rentals of 4–30 days in Romania, the conditions set no limit; above 30 days, the limit is 2,500 km per month. Rental Conditions, art. 3.16

Handover hours: Handover and return take place Monday to Sunday, between 08:00 and 20:00. Outside these hours they are done on request, for a fee of €20 per handover and/or return. Rental Conditions, art. 3.2

Can I choose an SUV with all-wheel drive (4×4)?
Some SUV classes have all-wheel drive. In the results you will find it under the “More” filter, “All-wheel drive (4×4)”, and the class's card shows “All-wheel drive”. All-wheel drive does not change the rules of the road: the rental company's conditions allow paved roads only, and in winter, on roads covered with snow, ice or frost, the law requires winter tyres.
Is there room for a lot of luggage in an SUV?
It depends on the class: each card shows the number of seats and bags. In the results you can filter by “Large bags” or sort by “Most space”.
Do I book a specific SUV model?
No, you book a car category, not a specific model. The car in the picture is an example of the category, which is why “or similar” appears next to the name. If the car you chose can no longer be provided, the rental company can offer you, under its conditions, a similar car or an available alternative.
How much does it cost to rent an SUV?
The price is calculated for each car category, for your location and dates, so we cannot quote it in advance. In the results, choose “SUV” under “Vehicle type” and sort by “Total price: low to high”: that shows the SUVs available for your dates ordered by total price. Nothing is charged online on Car-Rentals.ro: you pay the rental company when you collect the car.
