One-way car rental in Romania
pick up in Bucharest, drop off in another city
One-way rental at a glance
Book your rental car
You can pick up a car in Bucharest and drop it off in another Romanian city. You start at the Bucharest office, at Henri Coandă Airport (Otopeni) or at Băneasa Airport, and choose one of the cities listed below as your return location.
The booking system calculates the one-way fee for your route and shows it in the price details before you send your booking.
How to book a one-way rental
- In the booking form, choose your pickup location: “Bucharest”, “Bucharest – Otopeni Airport (OTP)” or “Bucharest – Baneasa Airport (BBU)”.
- Click “Different return location” and pick the city where you will leave the car under “Return location”.
- Choose your dates and times, then search. The results show the cars available for your route; if a return is not possible on the route you chose, the form tells you and you can pick another return location.
- Before you send the booking, check the “One-way fee” line in the price details. It is included in the total.
- In your confirmation, under “Where to collect and return the car”, you will find the return location and, when the rental company provides them, the address, phone number and instructions. You can reopen the confirmation at any time on the Check reservation page.
Picking up in Timișoara or Cluj-Napoca
One-way return cities are currently offered only for pickups in Bucharest; for pickups in Timișoara and Cluj-Napoca, the booking form offers none at the moment. You can choose another pickup point from the form as your return location; the search shows whether the route is available and what it costs.
Rules for returning the car in another city
You book on Car-Rentals.ro and sign the rental contract at pickup with the rental company named in your booking. The rules for handover and return are those of the Rental Conditions of the company that hands you the car; the ones that matter for a one-way rental are summarised below under “What the rental company’s conditions say”, with their clause numbers. Before you set off, keep the following in mind:
- The return location is part of your booking and of the contract. On a one-way rental you choose the return city in the form, and the one-way fee is shown in the price details, included in the total, before you send the booking. The place, date and time of return are then the ones written in the contract.
- Changing the return location after pickup is something else. It is no longer the route you booked but a change to the contract: you need the rental company's consent and pay a relocation fee, which it communicates by text message or e-mail and which is payable by the return date at the latest. Ask for consent in writing or by phone; the rental company's number is in your rental voucher and in the booking confirmation e-mail.
- Do not return the car somewhere else without notice. For a car returned to a location other than the one in the contract without telling the rental company first, its conditions set an extra fee.
- Never leave the car without a handover. Notify the rental company, hand the key to one of its representatives and have both sides sign the handover report. Otherwise you bear the costs set in its conditions, for example bringing the car back to the branch where you rented it.
- Handover hours are set by the rental company; outside them, handover and return are possible on request, for an extra fee. If the car is returned outside office hours, at night, at the weekend or in conditions that prevent it from being checked (weather, dirt), your liability for any damage is extended, under the rental company's conditions. On a long drive, keep your arrival time in mind.
- Mileage. Short rentals may have a daily mileage limit, and extra kilometres are charged at the rate in the contract. Check the limit, and the rentals it applies to, before you choose your dates.
- Fuel. The amount of fuel at pickup is recorded in the handover report; how much fuel the car must have at return is set by the rental company's conditions.
- Leaving Romania is only allowed with the rental company's written consent, and only to the countries its conditions allow. A return city near the border does not give you permission to leave the country.
- Roadside assistance. On the road you have the rental company's roadside assistance; where it applies and what it does not cover are below under “What the rental company’s conditions say”, together with the other rules on this page.

How far the return cities are
Distances to the return cities vary a lot. Some approximate road distances from Bucharest to each city centre:
- Brașov: about 160 km.
- Constanța: about 240 km.
- Sibiu: about 290 km, through the Olt Valley.
- Oradea: about 590 km.
For a short rental, compare the distance with the daily mileage limit in the rental company's conditions and choose your dates accordingly.
What you need at pick-up
The driver’s documents, the card for the deposit and the age the driver must have are set by the rental company of your booking: its rules are below, under “What the rental company’s conditions say”, each with the article of its conditions.
Payment and what is included
- Nothing is paid online: you pay the rental company at pick-up. The deposit amount is shown in your booking summary.
- You see the total price before you send the booking, with the mandatory fees included.
- What the rate includes and what you pay separately (protection, the mileage limit, fees) are set by the rental conditions of the company that hands you the car.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can I return my rental car in a different city?
Yes, if you pick it up in Bucharest: at the Bucharest office, at Henri Coandă Airport (Otopeni) or at Băneasa Airport. In the booking form, click “Different return location” and choose your return city. The return cities are listed on this page, and the search results show whether the return works for your dates.
Can I rent one-way from Timișoara or Cluj-Napoca?
For pickups in Timișoara and Cluj-Napoca, the booking form does not offer return cities at the moment. You can choose another pickup point from the form as your return location; the search results show whether the route is available and what it costs.
How much is the one-way fee?
The booking system calculates the fee for your route, so we cannot quote it in advance. You see it in the price details as “One-way fee”, included in the total, before you send your booking. Nothing is paid online on Car-Rentals.ro: you pay when you pick up the car.
Where do I leave the car in the destination city?
The return location is in your booking confirmation, under “Where to collect and return the car”, together with the address, phone number and instructions when the rental company provides them. You can reopen the confirmation at any time on the Check reservation page.
Can I change the return city after I have picked up the car?
The return location is the one in your booking and in the contract. If, after pickup, you want to return the car somewhere else, you need the rental company's consent and pay a relocation fee; returning it to a location other than the one in the contract without notice is invoiced as an extra fee. The distance within which the location can be changed, and the amounts, are on this page under “What the rental company’s conditions say”. For any change, ask first: the rental company's number is in your rental voucher and in the booking confirmation e-mail, and you can reopen your booking at any time on the Check reservation page.
Is there a mileage limit on a one-way rental?
It depends on the length of the rental and on the rental company's conditions: short rentals may have a daily limit, and extra kilometres are charged at the rate in the contract. The limit, and the rentals it applies to, are on this page under “What the rental company’s conditions say”. Some return cities are a long way from Bucharest by road (Oradea, for example, is about 590 km away), so choose your dates with the distance in mind.
Can I drop off the car outside the handover hours?
Yes. Outside the rental company's handover hours, handover and return are possible on request and for an extra fee; the hours and the fee are on this page under “What the rental company’s conditions say”. If the car is returned outside office hours, at night, at the weekend or in conditions that prevent it from being checked, your liability for any damage is extended, under the rental company's conditions.
Can I leave Romania with a one-way rental car?
Only with the rental company's written consent, and only to the countries its conditions allow, listed on this page under “What the rental company’s conditions say”; travel abroad cannot be booked online. A return city close to the border does not mean you are allowed to cross it.
