The driver's age
On Car-Rentals.ro you book for drivers aged 19 to 80. You choose the age in the search form, under “Driver’s age”, and you enter the age of each additional driver when you book.
- Premium Mercedes-Benz classes. For the premium Mercedes-Benz classes (A Class, C Class, E Class, S Class, GLA, GLC, GLE SUV and GLE Coupe), the rental company requires a driver aged at least 21. The classes are presented on our premium car rental page.
- Drivers aged up to 21 or over 65. When any driver on the booking, an additional driver included, is in these age groups, the rental company charges a young or senior driver fee, included in the total shown, and does not reduce the liability through the additional SCDW and SCDW+ protection.
- Drivers over 80. Online booking is not possible; write to us through the form on our Support page before you book.
The rental company's rule, with its article, and the Car-Rentals.ro rule are below, under “What the rental company’s conditions say”.
How long you have held your licence
On Car-Rentals.ro you book with a driving licence held for at least one year. In the search form, under “Licence held for”, you choose “Under 1 year”, “1 to 3 years” or “Over 3 years”; the option “Under 1 year” does not allow a booking.
The rental company charges a fee per rental, whatever its length, for drivers who have held their licence for less than 3 years. For a main driver who has held a licence for 1 to 3 years, the fee is included in the total shown when you search and appears in the price details, as “Licence experience fee”. The rule, with its article, is below.
International Driving Permit by type of licence
The rental company's conditions require an International Driving Permit in three situations: for citizens of states that are neither parties to the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic nor members of the European Union, or with which Romania has not concluded a treaty on the mutual recognition of driving licences; for documents issued in countries using a script other than the Latin alphabet; and for licences obtained by driving with the steering wheel on the right. The rule is reproduced below, under “What the rental company’s conditions say”, exactly as written.
Ask before you book if your licence was issued in the UK, Ireland, Malta, Cyprus, Greece, Bulgaria, Israel, Turkey, China or an Arab country. For these licences we tell you what the rental company requires before you book: write to us through the form on our Support page and say which country issued your licence.
| Your licence | International Driving Permit | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Issued in the UK, Ireland, Malta, Cyprus, Greece, Bulgaria, Israel, Turkey, China or an Arab country | We tell you before you book. | Ask before you book, through the form on our Support page, and say which country issued your licence. |
| From Romania or another EU country, in the Latin alphabet and obtained driving with the steering wheel on the left, and you are an EU citizen | Not required: none of the three situations applies. | Show your original licence at pick-up. |
| From a country outside the EU, in the Latin alphabet and obtained driving with the steering wheel on the left (other than the licences in the first row) | Mandatory for citizens of states that are neither parties to the Vienna Convention nor EU members, or with which Romania has not concluded a treaty on the mutual recognition of driving licences. | Check on the UN list whether your country is a party to the convention (under “Official sources”). If you are not sure, ask before you book. |
| From a country using a script other than the Latin alphabet (other than the licences in the first row) | Mandatory. | Bring it, together with your national licence. If your licence also shows its details in Latin letters, ask before you book. |
| Obtained driving with the steering wheel on the right, for example in India, Australia or Japan (other than the licences in the first row) | Mandatory. | Bring it, together with your national licence. |
What the law says. The Romanian Road Traffic Code recognises valid national licences issued by states that are party to the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic, by European Union countries and by states with which Romania has a licence-recognition treaty; other licences generally need an International Driving Permit as well (art. 83). When you collect the car, however, the rental company's conditions apply, and they are stricter than the law; the rules of the road for visiting drivers are in our guide to driving in Romania.
Book your rental car
Choose your pick-up point and dates to see the available cars and prices.
The documents at pick-up
When you sign the contract, you show:
- Your original driving licence, plus an International Driving Permit in the situations above.
- An identity document.
- A credit card valid for at least 3 months after the contract closing date.
The deposit is taken on the credit card, and not every card is accepted for it; the rental company's rule is below. How the deposit works and which cards are accepted is explained in our guide to the deposit, the card and protection.
Additional drivers
Only the drivers named in the contract may drive the car, and each additional driver must meet the same rental conditions.
You add additional drivers when you book, with the “Additional driver” option and the age of each; the form accepts up to two. The rental company's fee for each additional driver is below, under “What the rental company’s conditions say”.
If you do not meet the requirements
If you do not meet the minimum rental requirements, the rental company may cancel the booking, including one made through Car-Rentals.ro. So before you book, check:
- The age of each driver and how long the main driver has held a licence.
- Whether your licence falls under one of the situations that require an International Driving Permit.
- The credit card: it must be valid and accepted for the deposit.
If you have a question about your licence or the documents, write to us before you book through the form on our Support page. All the short answers about renting are on our FAQ page.
